Katelyn Silva

Kate is from Macomb, Michigan. She graduated from Oakland University in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry. She then received a Master of Science in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Immunology from Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2019. She has worked in various labs in multiple research areas including Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, infectious diseases, and clinical neuroscience research. Before joining Michigan State University, she had an internship in chemical industry and then was employed in the medical field. Kate joined the Draths group in December of 2020 and is working on using cis-CaaD and Cg10062 as a means to produce C3 and C4 chemicals from C1 feedstocks. She hopes to use enzyme kinetics and crystallography to fully understand the mechanism of these enzymes towards the production of malonic acid. Outside of the lab, her hobbies include music, traveling, and spending time with her dog, Juniper!
